Chunghwa Telecom and Alcatel-Lucent jointly announced the launch of an optic-fiber network project to build the first GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) network in Taiwan, according to a February 25, 2011 report by the Economic Daily News of Taiwan. The GPON network is scheduled to become commercially available in the third quarter of 2011. It is reported that with the new GPON network, Chunghwa Telecom will be able to provide integrated audio, video, and data services to its residential and business customers.
